Sir Paul Altman

Body

For over four decades Sir Paul Altman has combined two of his passions – real estate development and the conservation of Barbados’ heritage – to create lasting edifices on the physical landscape and cultural psyche of Barbados.

As the C.E.O. of Altman Real Estate,he has significantly helped to set the tone for Barbados’ luxury residential market through development of:

  • the Royal Westmoreland golf community;
  • the highly successful Sugar Hill Resort;
  • Limegrove Lifestyle Centre, Barbados’ first mixed-use centre.

Sir Paul is a Past President of the Barbados National Trust and is currently involved in urban renewal programs across the island. The restoration of the Synagogue Historic District, which dates back to 1654, was led by Sir Paul and his family. This restoration highlights one example of his commitment to maintaining the heritage of Barbados.

Sir Paul is involved in a number of charitable endeavours: he is Chairman of the Barbados Community Foundation; and he is a Trustee of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, Barbados.

Over the years, Sir Paul has been recognized for his various contributions:

  • 2000 - a Centennial Honour from the Barbadian Government;
  • 2007 - a Gold Crown of Merit from the Barbadian Government;
  • 2008 - University of the West Indies’ Caribbean Luminary Award;
  • 2008 - inducted into The University of the West Indies Chancellor’s Circle;
  • 2010 - selected to serve as the Chairman of the Campus Council at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus;
  • 2013 - Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal;

In 2016, Sir Paul was honoured with the title of Knight Bachelor, as part of the British Honours System, for services to the preservation of historic buildings and real estate development.

Sir Paul holds a BBA from the University of Miami and was awarded an

honorary Doctor of Laws by the University of the West Indies.
